COURTHOUSE TOWER

Winter at Arches National Park

Wintertime is coming up, with the season's first snow dusting the red rocks around Moab sometimes in late November and the highest chances of snowfall in January (climate charts). This small town in Utah is famous for its incredible surroundings and world class scenery. We equally love the amazing arches, spires and towers in Arches National Park, the natural beauty of Needles District and the panoramic vistas in the Island of the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park.

Winter season in Red Rock County is pretty chilly. Temperatures can drop well below freezing, especially at higher elevations. But a visit during this time of the year can be very rewarding for photographers. The sandstone takes on a richer hue during moist weather and the contrasting colors of the pure white, the dark sandstone and the blue skies are at their most intense.

Last winter we spent a couple of days in Moab around New Year's Eve shooting snow-capped red rocks. The Courthouse Tower, pictured here, is one of the most promiment sandstone buttes along the scenic drive leading through Arches National Park.
