Roque Nublo in Gran Canaria

New reservation system implemented at Roque Nublo

Starting February 3rd, 2025, a pre-booked time slot will be required when hiking to Gran Canaria's iconic landmark Roque Nublo. Access to the "rock in the clouds" will be restricted from 9 AM to 5 PM daily, at least on the shortest and easiest trail (S-70). The reservations are available free of charge at https://reservasroquenublo.com. Each hiker can apply up to five permits. The QR codes are checked at the old parking lot at the S-70 trailhead at Degollada de Goleta. From there, it's still 1,5 km and a 150 m elevation gain to the famous Roque.
The old lot is closed permanentely now and the nearest parking options are located at the junction Cruz de Los Llanos (5 km) and in Tejeda (15 km). The shuttle bus runs every 30 minutes from 9.30 AM to 6 PM with stops at Tejeda – Cruz de Tejeda – Degollada de Becerra – Cruz de Los Llanos – Degollada de Goleta (trailhead!) – Ayacata – Tejeda. It usually takes 10 minutes from Cruz the los Llanos and half an hour when starting at Tejeda. Be sure to allow enough time so that you will arrive at the trailhead on time. The booked time slot is just one hour.
Therefore, from now on staying at Roque Nublo for sunset (as shown on this month's image) will be rather tricky. The sun never sets before 6 PM, not even during wintertime. And since the twilight hour is rather on the short side on the Canary Islands most of the hike back to the car has to be made in complete darkness on uneven terrain or - what we can't really recommend - following the dangerous narrow mountain roads. Hopefully, there will be some improvements to the new regulations anytime soon.
