Roque Bentayga and Roque Nublo at Sunset

Just like last year we spent a couple of days at Gran Canaria in mid November. And we enjoyed almost the same crazy weather conditions high up in the mountains again. Even when facing hours of continuous drizzle and fog, you should never give up - the sky might clear up in the blink of an eye! That's exactly what happened at this very special evening, when we had almost zero hope for a decent sunset. While still standing there wearing a rain poncho and holding an umbrella, all suddenly the sun peaked through the dense fog, lightening up the canyon walls as well as Roque Bentayga (1.412 m) and its adjacent smaller monoliths. To our delight even Roque Nublo ("rock in the clouds"; 1.813 m) made its appearance and a lovely rainbow touched ground near the small village of Tejeda. What a sight!

But all this mood did not last long. Shortly after the sun had set, the skies cleared up and the scenery almost started looking boring at dusk. It's incredible how things can change that fast! But moments like that is what draws us back to Gran Canaria. So we started making travel plans even before we left the island last week. And now we are looking forward to returning there soon and go on chasing rainbows. To be continued... ;-)
