El Bufadero de la Garita in Gran Canaria

Happy NEW YEAR!

The Bufadero at La Garita in Gran Canaria was already selected as image of the month. Nevertheless it is such a fascinating subject to shoot that we can't help showing another picture from that place. This one was taken just two days before the last image (see link above), but not right at sunset. The sun had moved already a little bit higher and to the south, but photography was still rewarding due to all those crazy clouds blocking most of the direct light. A reversed neutral density filter helped keeping the brightness throughout the image in balance. Yes, from time to time we are still that old-fashioned, and instead of doing bracketing we opt for an all-in-one shot without having to spend much time in post-processing and blending.

Bufadero is the name of the small blowhole located behind the lava bowls. When the ocean waves roll in, it spouts on a regular basis while the water cascades into the bowls. It is a fantastic place for photographers and we enjoy watching it each time we are in Gran Canaria. This island is still somewhat under the radar and that's why the odds of being the only ones standing there next to the Bufadero with a tripod are pretty high at sunrise.

We started visiting the Canary Islands a couple of years ago, it's one of our favorite destinations during wintertime. This archipelago is located way south and just off the coast of Africa. Weather is warm and spring arrives as early as January. So right now would be a great time to be there again, since the almond trees will also be in full bloom by the end of the month. But this year we will wait a few weeks more and hopefully finally shoot the wonderful tajinastes azul, something we had in mind back in March 2021 and that we were not able to do since our flight was cancelled due to the pandemic. We are very much looking forward to it and besides that, we also plan returning to Iceland for more crazy northern lights shows!
Hope all of you are doing fine and that you also have a lot of trips or photography projects that you are looking forward to!
Happy New Year!
